When the federal government shutdown halted SNAP benefits starting Nov. 1, roughly 15% of Polk County households will lose critical funding to purchase basic food.
More than 42,000 families are expected to be impacted, according to Christina Criser Jackson, president and CEO of the United Way of Central Florida.
To help fill this gap, Polk County and Central Florida nonprofit agencies are working to provide emergency food distributions in addition to the regular scheduled events offered by many local churches and charities.
